Autonomic Nervous System - two complementary divisions with opposing effects, diffusely acting upon multiple organ systems simultaneously - balance of sympathetic/parasympathetic systems maintains homeostasis of body - autonomic = ‘involuntary’, with minima l conscious/cortical regulation - sympathetic division of the ANS = “fight or flight” - end - organ target cells have one of three types of receptors at the sympathetic nerve synapse: - alpha r eceptor = GI and skin arteriolar smooth muscle, and GI gland and bladder sphincter smooth muscle - beta receptor = coronary, pulmonary, renal, and skeletal muscle arteriolar smooth muscle, pulmonary bronchiolar smooth muscle, and liver hepatocytes - muscarinic receptor = cutaneous sweat glands - parasymp athetic division of the ANS = “rest and digest” - target cells have only one type of receptor at parasympathetic nerve synapse ©
